The Thames towpath: Limehouse to Canary Wharf
Going from the historic charm of Limehouse to the steel-and-glass skyline of Canary Wharf is one of the most rewarding short walks in London. At just under a mile, this stretch of the Thames Path packs centuries of history, literary landmarks, and world-class architecture into a 25-minute stroll.
Here is everything you need to know about the Limehouse to Canary Wharf riverside walk.
The Route: From Docks to Skyscrapers
Distance: 1.4km (0.9 miles)
Time: 20–30 minutes at a leisurely pace
Begin your journey at Limehouse Basin. Once the main gateway between the River Thames and the UK’s canal network, it is now a peaceful marina filled with narrowboats and yachts. It’s the perfect spot to grab a coffee before hitting the river.
Stepping Back in Time on Narrow Street. Follow the signs for the Thames Path toward Narrow Street. This is one of the most atmospheric corners of East London. Keep an eye out for:
The Grapes: A legendary pub dating back to the 16th century, famously frequented by Charles Dickens and now co-owned by Sir Ian McKellen.
The Narrow: A Gordon Ramsay gastropub housed in a Grade II-listed former dockmaster’s house, offering great views of the water.
Westferry Circus and the Big Reveal
As you leave the historic houses behind, the path climbs slightly toward Westferry Circus. This is the "money shot" of the walk. To your west, you’ll see the sweeping curve of the Thames toward the City and Tower Bridge; to your east, the towering skyscrapers of Canary Wharf suddenly dominate the view.
The Canary Wharf Promenade
The final stretch takes you along the polished riverside promenade of Canary Wharf. The path widens here, leading you past the Canary Wharf Pier. It’s a complete shift in energy from the quiet cobbles of Limehouse to the bustling, high-energy heart of London’s financial district.
Try to time your walk for golden hour. Watching the sun set behind Tower Bridge from Westferry Circus is spectacular.
If you’re feeling energetic, continue past Canary Wharf to Greenwich via the Greenwich Foot Tunnel—it adds about another 45 minutes to your trip.
