About the Building
Granville Square was designed by WJ Booth and built C1839 and is one of the most inviting Garden Squares in the Lloyd Baker Estate. T.J. Lloyd Baker chose the name Granville Square in honour of his first wife’s uncle, Granville Sharp, a philanthropist and one of twelve men who in 1787, formed the Society for effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. There are several portraits of Granville in the National Portrait Gallery and a memorial to him in Westminster Abbey. Olive, Granville’s granddaughter, may have inherited some of his compassion along with the estate in the 1920s, as she often visited her tenants to make sure they were not in need.
About the Area
Granville Square sits in the Finsbury Conservation Area giving it a village atmosphere and in 1972, the square benefited from the formation of The Amwell Society. The society’s aim is to preserve the special character of the area, the architecture, heritage, environment and community spirit together with promoting high standards of design in neighbouring proposed developments. Members include local residents, some 200 households to date, others come from the independent shops, coffee bars and antique shops in Amwell Street and the society welcomes new members.
