Whereas I love the Barbican tower flats, duplexes and mews houses, the Barbican studio flats leave me somewhat despondent. Perhaps Chamberlin Powell & Bon knew that by 2013 nearly all of them would be pied-a-terres for City bankers, who would need little more than a wall bed.
The studio flats in Cullum Welch, Golden Lane Estate, on the other hand are a delight. Full of loads of clever details to maximise space and storage—and you can actually live in them! This particular flat is on the top floor which is a bonus, with one side overlooking the tennis courts and the other towards the Barbican.
Cullum Welch was one of the later blocks to be built on the estate, made from pink (yes pink!) brick and reinforced concrete. For reasons of economy, the flats were designed without balconies—to compensate, the windows extend from floor to ceiling. In addition, and forming a particularly distinctive feature, there are wide pre-cast concrete planters and shelves with circular holes for flowerpots. (The shelves were specifically designed to present an interesting pattern when empty.)
There hasn’t been on one of these flats on the market for a couple of years, and with no other flats under £700,000 in neither the Barbican or Golden Lane it will be interesting to see how quickly it’s snapped up.
